More important-- Grace or Works?

9/16/03

Question: I have seen in some of your answers, the LDS view on "good works". Just out of curiosity, which is stronger in the view of salvation, Belief in Jesus Christ or doing good works or is it equal ?

I know that God is of mercy and I don't think that there is any one "true" or "right" religion as long as the teaching is there of Jesus and his suffering on the cross for each and every one of us. I think that any religion that brings someone to Christ, and teaches us to pray, and teaches us to turn our lives over to God to do His will....wow.....that is the right religion!! Donny, thank you for taking the time to answer questions. God is touching lives through you!

Response: Thank you very much for sharing your conviction of the gift of grace offered to us by the suffering of the Savior. I agree so much with what you stated in that the way we live our lives would have little bearing, if Christ had not paid for our sins. His mercy opened the door to returning back to our Heavenly Father. I love the scriptures that emphasize the importance of faith and the futility of works without the grace offered through Christ's atonement.

I also agree with you that repentance means to stop sinning for "Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:" " (1 Peter 2:21)

There are three basic Christian positions: The Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches believe that Christ organized a church and established a religion that has continued down through the ages. They believe they are the SUCCESSION of that church.

The PROTESTANT churches were formed because the REFORMERS (like Martin Luther) were convinced that there had been a falling away from the original and they attempted to REFORM it.

The third position is that there was indeed a complete apostasy (falling away) which needed the promised RESTORATION of the organization, doctrines, authority and ordinances which were a part of the church and gospel that Jesus and his Apostles established (see Acts 3:19-21).

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that Christ's church has been restored in the "latter days".

Thank you for your kind remarks. I am motivated by my faith to try to live my life in accordance with the teachings of our Savior. God bless you,
