Do LDS observe the Sabbath as Jewish people do?

9/14/01

Question: In Judaism, we observe the Sabbath by not working, which includes no driving, use of electricity, or any other type of labor. Do Latter-day Saints also observe the Sabbath this way? Are there similar restrictions for LDS as there are for Jewish people on the Sabbath?

Response: In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we believe in honoring the Sabbath day and keeping it holy. Even though our Sabbath is on Sunday, and yours is on Saturday, the Sabbath observance takes on the exact same meaning and value. Our people are counseled not to work (be employed) on Sunday, but rather to attend their worship services to study the scriptures, to rest as needed, to visit the sick and the elderly and see to their needs. To fix food with solemnity and simplicity (avoid a party type atmosphere) for the fixing and eating of meals. However, there is nothing in doctrine, which suggests that we should not use electricity or drive a car. For example, a Jewish individual who did not live right next to a synagogue (or chapel) might find it very difficult for his family of little children or old people, to walk all the way to and from the synagogue. We would counsel our people to either drive their cars or take the bus or train.

We believe that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. It's purpose is to gain more spiritual insight by avoiding the common, ordinary things of the world, but living what we call "Christ centered lives," (which you might call "Jehovah centered lives.)" in order to help and bless other people by acts of kindness and love. I hope that this is helpful to you.
