Question

I was talking to a lady at work and she was telling me that she had just came back from Utah after attending her sons wedding. She and her husband were not allowed to attend the ceremony in the temple because they were not LDS. They had to wait until the reception. Why is it that people of other faiths are not allowed to enter LDS temples. What if someone wanted to attend a few services to see if they wanted to convert or something like that?

You asked why those who are not of the LDS faith are not able to attend a wedding ceremony in the temple. This question comes up often and I should have clarified this in "My Beliefs" page. Entrance into the temple is reserved for those members of the church who have received a "recommend" (they go through an interview to see if they are living up to certain standards the Church sets) from their priesthood leaders. The worship and sacred ordinances taking place in the temple are so important, and if the temple were open to the public and any casual visitor or curiosity-seeker could simply come and go at his choosing, you can imagine how disruptive it would be to the lovely spirit and sacred nature of the ordinances taking place. In addition to our temples, there are countless chapels throughout the country, in every state and major city. People of all faiths or denominations are invited to come to those chapels to observe our worship services, and even worship with us if they choose. If they find that they are interested and want to know more about what we believe and why, the church has a missionary program that will introduce them to all of our beliefs. From there, people can determine for themselves whether it would be worth pursuing.
