| Question |
What does it mean to be "sealed eternally" when you are married in a temple, as opposed to being married in a church, Mormon or another religion? Also, what percent of Mormons are married in a temple?
|
| Response |
You asked what it means to be sealed eternally when married in a temple, as opposed to being married in a church. To be married in a temple and sealed eternally means that instead of having the traditional dialogue, "until death do us part," conferred upon us at the conclusion of the marriage ceremony (this signifies that the marriage performed is for the duration of this life only), those who are married in the temple, by one who has been given this sacred sealing power, are sealed not only for the duration of this life but for all of eternity. We believe literally that husbands and wives who live lives true and faithful to all of the principles of the gospel will be together forever.
You asked what percentage of Mormons are married in a temple. That is a very hard question to answer today because the church has grown so rapidly in countries outside of the United States and many of these people do not have access to a temple. But, for those members around the world who do have access to a temple, the large majority of them are married in one of those temples.
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
