Question Man become gods? and God has a flesh and bone body?

Response You have asked two very important questions.

The first has to do with the LDS belief that we will all become gods one day. I wish that there were time and space in this e-mail to elaborate fully on that interesting question, but I cannot do justice to it in the space allotted. I’m wondering if you would allow me to ask two representatives of our church to call on you and explain what we believe and why, and give you insight into where such doctrine comes from. I can say, in the briefest answer, that not all of God’s children will have the opportunity to attain such a state. It depends our willingness to keep all His commandments throughout our lives.

Your second question asked if God himself is made of flesh and bones, and whether we will become like Him. Our belief is that God, our Father, and his Son, Jesus Christ, have bodies of flesh and bone. A major physical difference between them and us is that they are immortal. They are resurrected beings. They do not have mortal blood running through their veins, but some other eternal substance. We know, in reading Luke chapter 24, verses 36 through 39, that the Savior himself appeared to his apostles after his resurrection. He said, "Behold, my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see me have." Then we learn, in reading Acts chapter 1 verses 9 through 11, that this same resurrected Christ was taken up into heaven. While his disciples watched him ascend, two angels stood by them and testified that this same resurrected Jesus would come in like manner as they saw him go. This means that when he comes again, he will still be a resurrected being. And finally, we read in Hebrews chapter 1, verses 1 through 3, that Paul testified, as he taught the Jews, that this same resurrected Christ was the express image of the person of our Heavenly Father. That is, He looked like His Father in every way, and since we know from the scriptures that Christ showed his body of resurrected flesh and bones to countless disciples, as well as to his apostles, that express likeness is that of a resurrected being. The Father, therefore, is also a glorified, resurrected being, with a body of flesh and bones. I hope this is helpful to you.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
