Beliefs > Question & Answer > LDS View of God

Question I have a question concerning where priorities are in the Mormon Church. I heard Merrill say before that the family comes first then your religion then your job or whatever you do for a living. Shouldn't it be religion then family then job? It just seems to make more sense because the most important thing should be God. Our purpose in life is to worship him and live for him. How do you do that when you put family first?

Response Regarding your questions concerning priorities between God, family, job, etc., you ask a very good question.

A prophet of God once said, "No success can compensate for failure in the home." Merrill’s reference to family in the order you heard it was with that perspective in mind. If we love God with all of our heart and mind, then our relationship to our family will be totally Christ-centered and of the highest order.

We believe that the basic unit of the church is the family. We feel that the home is the basis of a righteous life and that nothing can take its place nor fulfill its essential functions. Within the family, people experience most of life’s greatest joys and greatest sorrows. The family relationships of every person are of vital importance and of all the social organizations created for human beings, only the family is intended to continue into the next life.

We believe that every person is a child of Heavenly Father as well as a child of his mortal parents. Each individual was created spiritually and physically in the image of God. The way parents treat their children and the way children must be taught to respond to their parents is in a Christ-centered, loving, patient way. The example set by parents for their children must of necessity, if we love God with all of our hearts, be centered in Him and our Savior.

If you would like, I would be happy to send to you a couple of young ladies who represent our church to explain what we believe on this matter of God and family and many other important things. Please let me know if I should do that.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
