I agree that it is difficult to understand why there is so much suffering on this earth. I agee with you that Satan, who even caused a war in heaven (see the 12th chapter of Revelations) and was cast to the earth with his followers. I am sure they are still waging war by prompting people to be mean, to wage war and to cause so much suffering.
Heavenly Father allows this because we are here to learn good from evil and to prove that we will choose the good. Freedom of choice and troubles that occur on this earth is part of the test. It is how we deal with what happens to us, that is the test. When people die in war, it does not trouble our Heavenly Father like it does us, because everyone remains alive to him whether in this life or in the spirit world after this life, the gospel can be learned and lived or rejected. That is the ultimate test.
