Question In LDS beliefs is it possible to become a God one day?

Response Thank you for the question. I have received this question a few times lately and here is how I answered it:

The question came: You believe that when you die you can become a God in the next life. My response: The way you put it sounds weird to most people, but we are not unique in believing that God is our Heavenly Father and the Bible makes this abundantly clear:

8…your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven , (Matthew 6:8 - 9 ) <[> 17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. (John 20 :17)

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. [including some inexplicable, indefinable spiritual essence.] (Acts 17:29 )

9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? (Hebrews 12 : 9)

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs ; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. (Romans 8:16 - 17)

1 THESE words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was . (John 17 :1 - 5 )

These and other scriptures make it abundantly clear that the Father sent his Son to earth, to become the Redeemer, our Savior. It is also clear that we are our Heavenly Fathers spirit children and that we have the opportunity to be glorified as "joint heirs with Christ". To reach this godly status, we must follow Jesus, by living the gospel he taught and strive to : 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. ( Matthew 5 :48)

We know we will never be equal with God, our Heavenly Father, but as our Father, he is offering all that he has to those who qualify to include a resurrected, immortal and even Celestial Body as Paul explained: 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh… 40 There are also celestial bodies… glory of the sun. 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power :

Why is it so hard for Bible believing people to understand what has been revealed in clearness through latter-day prophets, that as earthly parents, we offer all we have to our children and they grow up to maturity to look and be like their parents. As a loving Heavenly Father, God offers all to those who will prepare to abide his holy presence and to be glorified with him and empowered by him and be perfected in him, through the atonement of his son Jesus Christ. Why is this natural cycle of life so hard to attribute to God.

I feel bad that everyone does not understand that as a child of our Father in Heaven, our ultimate purpose in this life is to become like him. With our Savior, Jesus Christ, paying for our sins through his infinite atonement and through our following him in repentance and baptism for the remission of our sins, we can become perfectly pure and able to abide his presence and receive of his glory and power as promised.

I am so grateful to know this is true.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
