Beliefs > Question & Answer > Marriage

Question You speak of a married couple being bound together eternally. How does this affect divorced couples?

Thank you.

Response Eternal Marriage is a result of a sacred covenant that is performed only in Holy Temples by those who have been ordained with the keys of the priesthood that was given anciently to Peter: "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:19 ) These keys were restored to the earth by Peter himself in 1829, and have to do with a sacred binding of famiies. As indicated, the keys included the authority to "loose" and well intended the couples though bound in the temple, are still divorced and these eternal marriage covenants can be cancelled under certain circumstances.

This covenant of Eternal Marriage performed by one possessing these "keys of the kingdom of heaven" in holy temples, are in direct contrast to all other marriages or divorces that are performed by civil authority "until death you part" and have no promise of being bound (or loosed) forever.

I consider it the greatest blessing of my life to be bound to my dear Debbie for time and all eternity.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
