Question As long, as I pray and fast and pray again, etc., is it ok to say "no" when asked to serve a calling? No, I haven't been called; just am wondering. This is hypothetical, so you're not advising me about a specific situation. My friend, teacher and mentor (not a priesthood holder) in the church says "No way -- one should never turn down a calling." What are your thoughts?

Response One eternal blessing is that of free agency, however, when we enter into the covenant of baptism and especially covenants in the temple, we in essence commit to become a part of the Lord’s team. If one is on a team and the coach asks him or her to go into the game and they refused, what would you think of that team member? I personally am inclined to accept any calling that would come to me if at all possible and I believe this would be appropriate for any member of our Church. Of course, if I was asked to do something that would greatly conflict with my livelihood, then I am sure it would be appropriate to discuss this conflict with the leaders who are making the calling.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
