What happened to those wives and children of polygamists after the manifesto - did those practicing plural marriage choose one wife over the others?

| Response |
You have asked, "What happened to those wives and children of polygamists after the manifesto? Did those practicing plural marriage choose one wife over the other?" This is a difficult question to give a complete answer to because there is so much that is not known since many of the polygamists which were in existence at the time of the manifesto chose to go into hiding rather than abolish their family relationships. Some of them did so right in Utah. Others moved to Mexico where there was no law against polygamy. Others settled in southeastern Arizona and basically extricated themselves from the society of the members of the church that occupied Utah. As you probably know, less than three percent of the church at any one time ever practiced polygamy. So, it wasn’t like the entire population of the church had to "shift gears" and change their lives.
