| Question |
I have a question about godparents. I am LDS and I have been wondering a lot about if people in the church could be a godparent. I have a best friend who is also LDS and is going to be getting married pretty soon. I want to be a godmother to her kids when she has them and I want her to be a godmother to my kids when I get married and have my own. Is there something in the church that prohibits against that? I kind of understand the role of a godparent, but not fully, so I was wondering if you could explain it to me.

| Response |
There is nothing in our LDS doctrine or tradition about Godparents. I can see nothing wrong with the idea of the kind of relationship that it implies with your best friend and her children. If it were me, however, I would call it something else just to avoid the repetitious use of the name of deity and to avoid the appearance of adopting incorrect traditions that may be popular in other faiths. This is just my opinion and it does not seem to be a huge deal either way.
Best of wishes for you and your friend,
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
