Beliefs > Question & Answer > The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
| Question |
I was wondering if you could help me or offer me some advise. I was brought up Church of England but over the past year I have become increasingly drawn to LDS. My father wouldn't allow me to talked to the missionaries in my house so I am unable to learn more.
I feel the faith I was baptized in isn't the one for me. I feel lost and I feel guilty going behind my father's back, but what am I supposed to do? He thinks that because I am only 18 that I am too young to understand life, so therefore too young to make such a big decision that will affect the rest of my life.
After reading your beliefs page I am more than ever convinced that the Mormon faith would be the religion for me to follow. I wouldn't take this decision lightly, but I need to talk to somebody who knows what they are talking about.
Is there any other way a missionary could talk to me apart from home?
I have another question concerning the Book of Mormon and the scriptures. Are they available in large print?
I would be grateful for any help you can offer me.

I am impressed and deeply touched that you would email me with this courageous inquiry.
It is my understanding that anyone over 18 is free to investigate and join our Church over there in England without parental approval, however I am very sensitive to your parent's feelings and your relationship with them.
There seems to be a wide spread misunderstanding there in Great Britain and your parents have obviously been influenced by the misconceptions. I think that you are very qualified to find the truth for yourself and some time in your life (better sooner than later) you will need to decide between their wishes and your inclination to learn and live by the truth. Chances are that in time you will be able to influence them to find the truth and not let tradition get in the way.
There are ways for you to meet with the missionaries such as at the meeting house of our Church nearest where you live. There are hundreds of LDS chapels in the UK and you can locate the one nearest you on the internet at http://www.lds.org.uk
If you go there on a Sunday morning, you will most likely find the missionaries there and they will be glad to teach you about the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, during your visit.
If this is a problem, we can work out other possibilities. You can visit www.mormon.org and in My Beliefs section of www.donny.com you can click on Multimedia, which has my narrated presentations explaining some of the basic teachings of our Church.
I started my own personal search into the Book of Mormon at about your age. Though I had been raised in a "Mormon" family, I needed to know for myself of its truth. After reading and praying and trying to live a Christ-like life, it was by the power of the Holy Spirit that helped me realize that the Book of Mormon and the Church was true. I am confident that through an honest and prayerful search, you will receive the same conviction that I have.
I am sure the missionaries can provide you with a Book of Mormon in large print but if not, we will arrange to get one to you.
Please keep in touch, let me know how you are doing and how I can help.
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
