Dear Mr Osmond I hope you dont mind me askings you these questions,but as a high profile Latter-day saint Iwas hoping you could help me. Would someone who was excommunicated from the the church twenty seven years ago when he was only seventeen years old be welcome to visit church? Would they be able to return to the faith? If you can answer these questions for me I would be grateful, if you cannot thankyou anyway. My best wishes to you and your family

Dear Russell, The very pinnacle of the history of the earth and of mankind was reached when the Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died for the sins of those who would come to him. If we do this, the promise is: "...though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;" To come unto him is the same process whether one has been excommunicated from the Church in times past or they are just discovering the truth of the restored gospel for the first time. The steps are to: 1) Exercise faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; 2) Repent; 3) Be baptized for the remission of sins and 4) To receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. If a person has been excommunicated, he or she must be interviewed by the Bishop and Stake President to ascertain that the reason for excommunication has been resolved. I am sure that those in the ward where the returning brother applies will offer a warm welcome back and I know that the Lord will receive him with open arms. "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance." (Luke 15:7) Will you please convey my congratulations and happiness to him for me as he returns. Tell him I said, "Welcome home".
