Beliefs > Question & Answer > Missions and Missionaries

Question I hope with all the faith I have you will get this email I know most are not read by you but other people but please if you will read this it's very important to me. To begin thank you for taking time out of you busy schedule to read this from someone you done even know........I have been a member of the church all my life and love the gosple with all my heart. I grew up in Utah but now live with my family in Gurnee Illinois. This however is not about me it's about my son Eric.

He has a very strong spirit but currently is being torn apart between what he should do and what the Lord wants him to do. You see Eric graduated from Babbizon (it's and Modeling and acting school) three years ago and is currently trying to get into modeling and acting and has had some adutions and been to some modeling shows but still trying. Eric is going to become an Elder next year and I think wants to serve a mission but feels he will miss out on his "Chance" if he goes.

I talked to him yesterday about the temple and he thinks no one will want him if he does not wear normal clothes because of his garments.....on friday I drop him off at work and we both cried because I really did not know what to tell him because I'm not in the business and want to as a father try and give him the best advise. His testimony is so strong and I think Satin is really working him up good he wants the Lord to be so proud of him because he feels the lord will take everything away if he make the wrong discision.

He is my oldest son we have four other children and I know his younger brother (now 16 ) is watching him close to see what he does....I love him so much and pray always that the Lord will bless him and help him understand that living the gosple and being famous can be done (not that he is famous) but we hope someday. Donny I dont want to lose him he is such a great spirit and will be a great Elder and a stong member of the church just talking to him proves that.

Please if you have anything advise for him I would be ever in debt to you I know your a VERY busy person and I'm sure get thses requests all the time. But Please know that my prayers have lead me down this path to find someone that is in the business and a strong member of the church to help my Son. Thank you for you time please understand I really love Eric and will be always on my knees waiting for the Lord to help him.

Response One of the greatest regrets of my life is that I was not priveledged to go on a full time mission. Although, someday, my wife and I plan to to serve a mission together once I'm done with this singing thing. :) The Lord has blessed me to be in the lime light enough to have the opportunity to reach out to people, such as through My Belief's section on my website. I have made sure that each of my sons are encouraged to go on missions. They all have done this so far. Some of my sons want to be performers and I feel they have the talent. I am so greatful, however, that they have chosen to fill missions and I know they will always be greatful for doing so. They have told me that.

I know the likes of Steve Young, one of the most famous football players of our time, and also a wonderful embassador for the Church, regrets dearly that he didn't go on a mission. On the other hand, Chad Lewis, the all pro tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles is a returned missionary who served in Taiwan and just last year was sent by the NFL throughout the Orient promoting the NFL because he spoke Chinese.

There is a story told by President Hinckley of someone who made a huge positive impression on him. He was a brilliant young student from the Orient who found the gospel when he came to the US to be educated. He explained that if he were to be baptized, he would be disowned by his family and rejected in his society and would not be given the opportunity for which he was sent to be trained. He said, that if this is the Lord's church, he could not see how he could do anything but be baptized, because following the Lord was far more important than what he was about to give up. I believe that you will be greatly blessed if you put the Lord first.

Remember the young man who came to Jesus: "And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions." (Matthew 19:16 - 22)

You have great possessions with your looks, your talent and whatever else which has caused you to pursue an opportunity in modeling.

Now, to me the right choice for you is clear, but it must be your choice. Please pray about it, and if you pray with an open mind and heart, the Holy Ghost will tell you what to do.

May the Lord bless you and guide you on your mission and your career. Let me know what you decide.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
