I am so very sorry to hear of your son's severe handicap. As you know, my
two oldest brothers were born with hearing handicaps. They have been able
to manage very well in their lives, especially with the special love and
care given to them by our Mom. I cannot even begin to imagine the
difficulty of being both deaf and blind and nor can I explain why our Father
in Heaven would allow this much difficulty to be heaped upon one person or even
more, that person's mother.
There is a clue in the Bible: "AND as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which
was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who
did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered,
Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God
should be made manifest in him." (John 9:1 - 3) How the works of God will
be manifest through your son, I suppose, depends upon how you and others
respond to this challenge. If you can come through this with great courage
and love, you will be blessed for all eternity in ways that we cannot even
begin to understand. I know this is easier to say than do, but you may not
have any alternative but to do your very best and in some future existence,
you may able to see that this was a very special trust, a monumental
opportunity.
We have a passage in our Doctrine and Covenants that touches on the
opportunity that accompanies severe challenges. The Lord revealed to the
Prophet Joseph Smith, "...peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine
afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well,
God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes."
(Doctrine and Covenants | Section 121:7 - 8)
I pray you will have strength and that you will feel the love and support of
the Lord.
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
