Question I really enjoyed reading your testimony on the Internet. I have been a member for 5 years and have struggled to gain a testimony. I have seen that many famous Latter-day Saints have strong testimonies. The pressures and visibility of yourself and others is amazing. It is also amazing that you can maintain a strong testimony in spite of it; how do you do it? This helps me feel that strong testimonies are possible for every Saint, including me. Thanks for taking the time to create this site.

Response A testimony can be a very delicate thing to achieve, let alone maintain, even for those you refer to as famous Latter-day Saints. There are certain guidelines that we all need to follow in order to receive that conviction of the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and it is only received upon the principles of revelation to one who humbly seeks after it. Once you receive that witness, the convincing power is so great that there will be no doubt left in your mind when the Spirit has spoken.

There are millions of people who believe Jesus lived and died and that His work was for the salvation of all souls; but unless they observe to keep His commandments and have accepted His truth as it has been restored, they don't know and cannot know the full significance of His mission and its benefits to everyone.

The Lord will not just give us a testimony without our putting forth an effort. Only through humble repentance and submission to the plan of salvation can a testimony be gained. Everyone is entitled to know truth if they will just accept his ordinances and abide faithfully in them.

We need to ask ourselves if we are doing all we can to receive a testimony. Are we having Family Home Evening with our families? Do we pray and read the scriptures together? Do we attend all our meetings on the Sabbath and keep it a holy day in our hearts? In other words, and I continually ask myself this same question everyday, are we doing enough in our lives, not only to gain a testimony, but to maintain a strong one?

I hope this helps you in some small way to build upon that light and knowledge that you have had within you for the past 5 years, whether it be as small as a "mustard seed" or as great as a sure witness of the truthfulness of all things.

Continue to do what you know is right in your heart.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
