| Question |
I have been LDS for a year and a half, after being lucky enough to be guided by you. I would like to thank you for your influence, as joining the church may have been the most difficult thing i have done, but it sure
has been the BEST . My life is 100% improved and i will be forever grateful to you for the gospel in my life and for your beliefs pages for without one
response on here, i would never have taken the first steps. I have had my
trials and currently face some difficult ones. My family are not members and
even though i am 25yrs old, i still live with them (as i am still in full
time education).I have never had much of a relationship with my family and
continue to experience real difficulty. I have two questions really;
Firstly, Is it true that we Choose our families while in our spirit bodies?
and if so how can i come to understand why i made such a painful choice?
Secondly, I have decided that on completion of my course, i want to go on a
mission. Do you have any advice for me on how to prepare and what i will
need to prepare for, having had experience of helping three of your sons
prepare. Do they have any advice for me?

Congratulations on your having the faith and courage to accept the gospel and to stick to it in the face of what sounds to be much opposition.
I know of no formal doctrine of the Church that teaches that we choose our families, but there are many who believe that and some who feel that we pretty much plan our lives before we came here. I also know of no one in this life that does not face challenges of various kinds, some worse than other. I have received many questions regarding some of these difficulties and all I ever can say is that it is not the problems that we face, but how we face them that really counts.
What a wonderful goal to go on a mission. It is clear that the standard for missionaries has been raised, and the emphasis is now on learning to follow the spirit, to teach by the spirit. Scripture study, prayer and righteous living is of course the means by which we enhance our receptiveness to the spirit. I am sure you will be a super missionary and someday, maybe even in the next life your family will be free from whatever prejudice is causing them to resist the gospel at this time. Don't give up. Greater miracles are common.
My prayers go out to you,
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
