Question

Dear Mr. Osomnd, I have been a faithful church member since I joined 7 years ago. My husband is good man and he loves me and our 5 children. However I cannot get him to go to church and he will not let me take the children to the LDS church. I feel bad being the only person that goes to church on Sunday. If am faithful can I obtain salvation for them? How can I get my husband to understand how wonderful it would be to all worship together? Please answer if you have the time. I know you are busy and have a family too.

Congratulations on your having the courage to persist in activity even though you are not able to get your family to follow. It is not easy, at best, sometimes to be a disciple of Christ. Part of the gospel, as you know, is the principle of free agency, and we can never impose our beliefs on others. I am sure it is important for you to show all the love you can muster to your husband and children and in all ways set a Christ-like example. This is the greatest teacher. It has been my observation, that if the spouse pushes our religion on the one that is not a member, the result is often a withdrawal or resistence that is counter productive. Pray every day and fast every Fast Sunday for the blessing of having your family join you in the gospel, but if they do not, I believe you will never-the-less be given all of the blessing that our Father in Heaven has to offer for anyone, for your faithfulness.
