Yes, I have read reports that there have been some benefits shown by indulging in minor amounts of alcohol, but I am also aware of other reports which indicate that even moderate amounts, damage brain cells.
What is concerning about this report, and I'm sure no one would argue with the fact that not all people, but so many individuals who indulge in a "moderate" amount of alcohol, somehow become addicted to it. Plus, we hear the same story over and over again; they become abusive, debilitated, and suffer all kinds of problems.
Our "Word of Wisdom" which prohibits the drinking of alcohol, tea, coffee, using tobacco or harmful drugs has been practiced for over 150 years, long before anyone knew the specific results of the use of these things. There has been much criticism throughout my life from what people have called harsh restriction of a Mormon life style. I personally am very grateful for these teachings, not restrictions, in my family as I was growing up.
It's really interesting to note that through well know studies, those who live by these standards of health, live an average of seven years longer than those who don't.
There is also a spiritual aspect of all of this, for
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)
Thanks again for your question.

[BEV's Thoughts: It has been my experience that the medical community/science will state one thing is an absolute must for our diets, and a few years later it is a big "'ooops', sorry, we have some new evidence now". For example, for a few years we were told not to eat eggs as they will give you high cholesterol. Now their standpoint is, that you will only have a problem with eggs IF you already have high cholesterol. Even the food pyramid is new, revised as more, so called, evidence is presented. It used to be the Four Food Groups were the healthiest way to live. Actually, if you study some of the healthiest nations with the lowest cancer rates and such, they don't abide by the Food Pyramid either.
Donny is right about other studies showing that even one drink of alcohol damages brain cells. There is much information out there now about how pregnant women can really damage their babies even if they have just a moderate amount of alcohol before they know they are pregnant.
I personally have a testimony of the Word of Wisdom, and that it came from our loving Father in Heaven. Even if the world does have it's 'evidence', I believe we need to trust in God, and obey Him, and develop faith.

Donny Osmond
