| Question |
I have recently been fighting against cancer and am now in remission, and my daughter had meningitis and now is undergoing tests for Crohns disease. On top of all this my 17 year old son has been diagnosed with Crohns disease, dyspraxia (clumsy syndrome) and dyslexia. Recent tests have also shown that along with my sister, my son, daughter, and myself all have inherited a rare medical condition which affects one in 200,000 and is inherited from our mother's side and it affects our joints and muscles.
All this has been between Sept 2002 up until now. In that time although aware of the situation NO-ONE, not even the minister has been in touch, visited me in hospital, or home, phoned etc. I feel very hurt and betrayed especially as I was the dance/drama leader, assistant youth club leader and a member of the puppet team.
However, I have been feeling what I can only describe as a burning desire to attend a Mormon church. Unfortunately, all I get is the missionaries but I feel 'threatened' and unable to trust them as they are so young and in my personal opinion not mature enough to have experienced life. I would far rather talk to someone of more experience and maturity. But again I am a little apprehensive.
You see in previous (and my 'old/current) church I have been confirmed as having the gift of prophecy and have worked as a prophet in the churches I belong to (I keep a book and write down date and time all the prophecies given to me). I now feel God may well be telling me to go to the local Mormon church.
I have never read or own a book of Mormon so don't know anything about it. I can only describe this burning desire deep inside me. I ask Donny questions about the church not to catch him out but so I can learn. But I am afraid of been hurt, betrayed and let down.
I was once told that there are care teams and/or mentors within the church. Can I just turn up at the church? Can I just attend a service to see? I have given this a great deal of thought and prayer as I don't want to be 'on the rebound' I have had this burning desire for a long time but always denied it or refused to acknowledge it's existance but I now begin to wonder if God has stepped in and is giving me a strong hint? please help if you can.

I know that you directed this question to Bev and she has given you some answers, but I wanted to respond as well. I am deeply sorry to read of the health problems that you and your family are having. I do believe in the power of prayer and that if you will ask Heavenly Father for help, he will help you according to His will.
I also believe that the burning desire you are feeling is coming from the Lord and that if you will listen and act upon it you will find the peace and joy you seek. It's not easy. Satan doesn't want you to find the truth and he will try anything to discourage you.
I suggest you find the name of the bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in your area and call him. I know he would be happy to meet with you and help you. As far as the missionaries are concerned, they really are very effective at teaching the basic beliefs of the gospel. I believe you can trust them as far as learning about the restored church and gospel of Christ.
If you aren't successful in contacting the bishop, please email me back with your phone number and address and I will contact him and have him call you.
I pray that this "burning desire" will lead you to the blessings that you seek after and that you can be happy along with your family.
(NOTE from Bev: I know the LDS Missionaries may seem young and inexperienced in life, and you would be right in many cases. However, they have the gift of the Holy Ghost, and they are set apart specially to teach of Christ, to preach of the fulness of the Gospel of Christ, and since I have a son currently serving a mission over in Finland :-)-- I know they teach with love. Don't forget that scripture says "And a little child shall lead them..." How much more inexperienced can a little child be in living, and yet, Christ says they will lead us?
If ANY of you would like to Donny or I to have the missionaries teach you what we believe, and to pray with you, even share a free video or Book of Mormon, please do not hesitate to email us at beliefs@donny.com, and we would be happy to arrange this personally for you. And please know that anyone is welcome to show up on Sundays to attend services at an LDS Church.)
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
