Beliefs > Question & Answer > Family

Question My question is about eternal families. I noticed in one of your answers you stated "We believe that if husbands and wives are sealed together, in one of our holy temples, they will be married and sealed together not only for the period of their mortal lives but throughout all of the eternities and not only they but their children will be with them as well, all based upon the willingness to keep the commandments of God."

I guess the best way to ask this is to give examples--such as --where will your wife Debbie spend eternity, with you or with her parents? Will your sister Marie be with your parents or with her husband? How about your children once they marry, will they spend eternity with you and Debbie or with their in-laws? I am a bit confused as to how this works and would like to find out. Thank you for your time.

Response Thank you for your question. I'll do my best to answer it. When Christ ordained Peter he said,

"And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
(Matthew 16:19) .

I think this scripture is generally misunderstood. The Prophet Joseph Smith learned through divine revelation that the "keys of the kingdom of heaven" had to do with binding families on earth with a covenant that provides that they "shall be bound in heaven".

The Prophet Joseph also taught that our lives hereafter will be similar in sociality to our earthly existence. Families will be united if bound by the "keys of the kingdom of heaven" in a Patriarchal (family like) order which means that, my wife and the mother of our children will still be the daughter of her parents and sister to her siblings. It will be just like it is here. Our goal is that we will all live the gospel of Christ in a way that we can all be together and there will not be the either/or scenario you are posing. I hope this helps,

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
