Thank you for your question. I'll do my best to answer it.
When Christ ordained Peter he said,
"And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
(Matthew 16:19) .
I think this scripture is generally misunderstood. The Prophet Joseph Smith learned through divine revelation that the "keys of the kingdom of heaven" had to do with binding families on earth with a covenant that provides that they "shall be bound in heaven".
The Prophet Joseph also taught that our lives hereafter will be similar in sociality to our earthly existence. Families will be united if bound by the "keys of the kingdom of heaven" in a Patriarchal (family like) order which means that, my wife and the mother of our children will still be the daughter of her parents and sister to her siblings. It will be just like it is here. Our goal is that we will all live the gospel of Christ in a way that we can all be together and there will not be the either/or scenario you are posing.
I hope this helps,
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
