Beliefs > Question & Answer > Word of Wisdom Questions

Question I didn't realise that the Mormons followed the same Bible as Christians. I was wondering why you believe you shouldn't drink alchoholic drinks or tea or coffee. In the bible It mentions Jesus turning water into wine and at the last supper he drinks wine. I can understand it from a health point of view but just don't know where it states it's wrong in the bible.

Response Yes, we do use the Bible and yes, we are Christians, hence the name "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". I'm not quite sure why some people think that we aren't.

Regarding the abstinence of coffee, tea, and similar substances that we feel are harmful things to the body, I'll refer to a scripture that states, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." (New Testament 1 Corinthians 3:16 - 17)

The Biblical 'new wine', was to my understanding, grape juice, that with age could become alcoholic, but the water turned to wine was likely fresh and not an alcoholic drink.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
