Beliefs > Question & Answer > Prayer
| Question |
This may seem like a silly question, but what is the significance of our
kneeling and folding our arms/hands when we pray? It is an act so common,
particularly at bedtime, and I wonder about its symbolic meaning.
We are often encouraged to talk or pray to God throughout the day as a way
of including Him in our daily activities. Students may say a prayer before
an important exam; some people may offer up thoughts while walking or
driving; and still others may pray in a moment of reflection while cooking,
swimming, or raking. And I believe that you mentioned in your book that you
and your family often said a prayer together before giving a concert. My
second question, then, is: Do these prayers have any less meaning because
they are not offered while down on our knees? Does God still hear us when
we think of Him while engaged in activities, or must we be kneeling with our
arms folded in order for our prayers to be heard?

When we kneel and fold our arms and bow our heads, as we pray to God, it shows our reverence and worship of Him.
It shows our humility and our willingness to "lower" ourselves as we approach Him in prayer.
You went on to say "We are often encouraged to talk and pray to God throughout the day as a way of including him in our

prayers have any less meaning because they are not offered while down on our knees? Does God still hear us when we think
of him while engaged in other
activities or must we be kneeling with our arms folded in order for a person to be heard?"
Since the beginning of time, prophets have told us that our Father in Heaven would have us "council with the Lord" in all
of our doings, and to always have a prayer in our hearts, and he will direct us for good. We have been further counseled
to not "pray as the hypocrites to be seen of men…" As we make our way through our daily experiences we should in fact keep
that prayer in our hearts and mind, and pray frequently to him for the things that we are in need of. We do not drop to
our knees and make a public display of our prayers because those who do not understand, would mock and ridicule the prayer
and God as well. To avoid such things, we do not make a public display of our praying.
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
