Beliefs > Question & Answer > Modern Day Revelation
| Question |
Hi Donny,
I enjoy reading your beliefs very much. I have done a bit of research on
the Book of Mormon, the Doctrines and Covenants and the Bible. I am not
very knowledgable, but I have noticed that more often than not the Book
of Mormon seems to agree with the Bible, but the D&C does not. For
instance, one topic I saw was that of being given the opportunity after
death to hear the gospel and accept or reject it. I have read many of
your responses that spoke about this. As I understand you, you believe
that all men will have the chance after death to hear the gospel and
accept or reject it. While I think that would be a good thing, I find
that the Bible seems to say it is not so, and so does the Book of
Mormon. yet the D&C does state this. Can you explain why the
contradiction between your Book of Mormon and the D&C? I am not
criticizing, just confused. The passages I read were as follows: In the
Bible it was Hebrews 9:27. In the Book of Mormon it was Mosiah 2:36-39
and Alma 34: 32-25. These all seem to state that once you die, if you
have not accepted the gospel, and repented you will have no other
chance. Alma seems especially clear on this. Yet in D&C 76:106-112 and
88-99 it seems to contradict both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Can
you clarify this? Or what do you make of it? Thanks so much for your
time and effort.

First, I would refer you to 1st Peter 3:18&19 and 1st Peter 4:6, and 1st Corinthians 15:29, which points out that after
Christ was crucified, He went to the Spirit World and taught the gospel to those who didn't have the opportunity to hear
and understand it while they were upon the earth.
Second, because those individuals who had passed on will have the opportunity in the Spirit World to hear the gospel,
members of Christ's original church were performing baptisms by proxy in order to provide them with the blessing of
baptism. Your Book of Mormon reference from Mosiah 2:36-39 and Alma 34:32-35 as scriptural evidence that the gospel won’t be
preached in the Spirit World is incorrect. Mosiah 2:36-39 clearly identifies that those who do have the
opportunity while here on this earth to hear and understand the gospel message, but then turn from it before they leave
this life, will not have that opportunity hereafter, which is exactly what the LDS Church teaches.

Your reference in Alma 34 has been taken out of context. Let me try to clarify. That entire 34th chapter is a dissertation
from the prophet Amulek, as he spoke to the Zoramities who were already members of the church who fell away from it’s
truths. Therefore, they had already had the opportunity to hear and understand the gospel. He was calling them to
repentance and reminded them that there would not be another chance for them after this life to accept the gospel message.
As our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has said through His prophets, as recorded in the Doctrine & Covenants, those who have
not had the opportunity to hear and understand the gospel while here on the earth will have that opportunity when they
leave this life. They may not even accept it then, but the opportunity will still be theirs so they can be fairly judged
like the rest of us who have had that opportunity. When we are judged at that final hour, the Lord will take everything,
and I emphasize everything, into account that we have been through in this life for that final judgment process. It only
makes sense to me that every one of his children should be given an equal opportunity to accept or reject truth. This is
another great example of a fair and just God.
I hope that this is helpful to you.
