Beliefs > Question & Answer > Marriage

Question Hello. I am on my 2nd marriage and very happily married this time for the past 7 years almost. We have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and as of this date have not chosen what type of faith we would like to raise her with. I was raised Catholic by my family and so is my husband. I wish to learn more about other religions and beliefs to see how we would be best on raising our daughter. I wonder though by reading your answers that I may be getting a little confused, can you please help? If I was to become a member of the LDS Church, & my husband was not, how would I be connected to him when I pass on to our Father? Will he be with me? Will my family & friends be there also? Or will I be connected to my first husband, I do have 3 children with him as well. I am just not sure on what to do with our daughter, I want her to be introduced into the teachings on Our Father. Any help would be very appreciated. Looking forward to your response. Thank you.

Response To that, I need to ask you a question for clarification. When you were married, the priest pronounced the marriage upon you and said the words, or something like them, "until death do you part", or "for the period of your natural lives", or something to that effect. There was no mention made in that ceremony that it would be binding in heaven. So I ask the question: if you do not become a member of this church, is there something in your doctrine that causes you to believe that you two will be together with your children in the eternities?

Having asked that question, I will now answer your original question. If you join this church and your husband does not, you and he will not be able to go to the holy temple and there be sealed together with your children for time and all eternity. Like all other marriages it will end at the death of each of you. You asked if your family and friends will be with you when you pass onto your father. Those who have lived, honest, Christ-centered lives, and who have kept the commandments and have done good throughout their lives, will be with you when you pass on into the spirit world. If your family and friends have not had the opportunity to hear and understand the gospel message while they are on the earth, it will be presented to them there, and they will have the opportunity to hear it, (see 1st Peter 3:18-19, 1st Peter 4:6). If they accept the gospel in it's fullness there, along with you, they will have the opportunity to inherit Heavenly Father's celestial kingdom.

The length of this e-mail would be considerable if I were to take time to introduce you to all of the teachings and doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Therefore, may I make a suggestion, I would like to send two young representatives of our church to meet you and your husband to explain to you exactly what we believe and why. They will not offend or argue. Their role is to simply explain our beliefs. Once you have had a chance to hear their message, you will know precisely whether it was worth pursuing, and you will also know if there is anything to this claim that we have regarding celestial marriage and being sealed together as families forever. If we are wrong on this, you will know if once you have had a chance to carefully and prayerfully consider their message. If you would like them to call on you please let me know by emailing me back with your address and phone number and I will have them contact you.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
