Beliefs > Question & Answer > LDS View of God

Question Isaiah 43:10 reads "Before me no god was formed nor shall there be any after me". and 44:6 "I am the first and I am the last". How does this fit in with the doctrine that there are other Gods? Also if God is a being with a physical body, how about John 4:24 reading " God is spirit"? Finally, a number of biblical scripures speak of God as being everlasting and eternal. Yet if He is an exalted man who came through the same progression that we have to come through, He would have once been a created spirit as we were. Therefor He would have had a begining. I would appreciate your help with these questions on the nature of God.

Response First of all let me say that we believe explicitly in the commandment which says, "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me." Not only is He our Father in Heaven, but He is the Supreme Being, He is all-powerful, all knowing, all seeing. There is nothing that He does not know, or that He can not do. With the help of His son Jesus Christ He created all things.

We know from the scriptures of the Bible as well as latter-day revelation, that God has a physical body as tangible as man's. The difference is that it is an eternal, perfect body. It does not age, it will never get sick. I refer you to the first line in Genesis chapter 1:26 "And God said, let us make man in our image and after our likeness." So then I ask the question, what do we look like? This quotation from Genesis says that we look like Him. We could fairly conclude that God has physical form then. Exodus chapter 33:11 says "And God spoke unto Moses face to face as a man speakth to his friend." From that we conclude that God has a face just like Moses had a face. In Matthew chapter 3:16-17 we read about the baptism of Jesus who when he had come up out of the water of the river Jordan after being baptized, heard as did all of those witnessing the baptism, the voice of the Father calling down from the Heavens "This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased." We can conclude from that that the Father and the Son are separate and distinct individuals. In Acts chapter 7:55-56 we read the account of the stoning of the great missionary, Steven, who before he died bore testimony as follows, "I see the heavens open and the son of man standing on the right hand of God." Since he did not say I see the heavens open and God standing there alone we can conclude that the Father and the Son are separate and distinct beings, but Jesus is at His right hand. As we read in John chapter 17:9-11, Jesus is kneeling in the Garden of Gethsemane praying to his father and asking that his eleven apostles be made one as they are one. Clearly pointing out that he is not asking that the eleven be made one individual, but rather one in purpose. That point is clarified in versus 20-23 of that same chapter, where he prays for all of us that we also may be one. Clearly being one in purpose as they are.

As to the quotation of John chapter 4:24, which said "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." We know from the scriptures sited in the previous paragraph, that God is more than just a spirit, but in fact has a tangible immortal body, just as Christ himself has and so demonstrated and testified when he said to his apostles in Luke chapter 24:36-43 "handle me and see for a spirit hath not flesh and bones and you see me have." And to reemphasize again Hebrews chapter 1:1-3, ". who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person." The express image of this person tells us that God our eternal father has an immortal a physical body. All of that having been said, what should we think of John 4 & 24. If we examine the scripture carefully we see the words "And they that worship him, must worship him in spirit." So, do we believe that John is suggesting only those without physical bodies could worship God, not at all, but rather those who worship him must do so by the spirit, meaning the Holy Spirit, which comes to men as they live clean and righteous lives.

God's nature is a spiritual nature that is not an earthly nature. He deals in the things of the spirit and he whispers to us by the spirit. He himself is not a spirit, the scriptures have made that clear, but he is a spiritual being and lives in spiritual realms and blesses us spiritually.

If I were you, I would get a copy of the Book of Mormon and spend time carefully studying it over the next couple of months. In it you will find complete and total clarification to all of these questions. If you read it with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, really wanting to know whether these things are true, and if you pray and ask God about it by the power of the Holy Ghost, He will clarify the truth of it to you. I hope that this is helpful.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
