| Question |
Dear Donny,
I am a new visitor to your website. I found your Belief site to be very interesting. First, let me say, I
am not Mormon, but my beloved cousin is. Usually, I bounce my questions off her, but this is one she has
wondered about also. So I thought I would give it a whirl and see if you might know the answer. My cousin told
me that we were somewhere else before here before we came to this planet and we pick the family down on
earth we want to be born into (I am using my own words). Well it turns out that my parents were very physically
and emotionally abusive. I asked my cousin, since these are her aunt and uncle, knowing how they are, why
would I put myself through such a horrible situation. My cousin, said 'GOOD QUESTION'. My parents do not have
a heart after God, they are very evil. If they want to really get to me in the old days they would quote the only
scripture they knew... "obey your parents". I did not follow their evil ways nor do evil to others as they wanted
me to. They do not want the name of Jesus even mentioned in their house. So if you can answer that question,
I would appreciate it very much. Then I will pass it on to my cousin also.

To say that I am sorry to hear of the unChrist-like way that you have been treated by your parents would be an understatement. I can hardly imagine what
some people do to their little ones. It is a great tragedy. However, in answer to your question as to how such things could be, I will refer you to a scripture in
John chapter 9 in the New Testament (see John 9: 1-3). Christ healed a blind man and his disciples asked Him, "who sinned this man or his parents that he was
born blind...?" The Savior's answer is classic, "Neither this man, nor his parents but that the mysteries of God might be made manifest through him". One of
the great mysteries of God is that Christ can change men's hearts.
I hope for you, that as you seek diligently, you will know the total truth about Jesus Christ
and His gospel, and what it will mean in the lives of others. Someday, if you have the opportunity to be a mother, you may be able to help a friend who may
have tendencies toward meanness with their children. You can stand as a witness of Christ by your positive example and sweet spirit.
As to your question regarding where we came from, the answer is that before we came to this earth we lived with our Heavenly Father as his spirit children.
We were taught by Him, guided and prepared by Him to come to this earth and gain a physical body and learn to keep His commandments and to experience
life and overcome the trials of this world. By proving ourselves faithful and worthy we can return to live with Him again after we leave this life. In order for you
to have a complete picture and full understanding of all of this I would be grateful for the opportunity to send a couple of representatives from our church to
explain exactly all that we believe and why. Once you have had a chance to hear that message, you will be able to determine for yourself whether it would be
worth pursuing. There are great blessings in store for you if you will.
If you would like me to do this for you, please send me your address and I’ll take care of it.
[Bev's response: I have not found any official doctrine that states that we each chose our parents.]
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
