| Question |
I am curious over the media attention that was brought to Mormonism over people of African descent (or people of color) not being allowed into the Mormon church. I have cannot claim to have ever read any literature on Mormonism, but I am a constant skeptic on press releases. I cannot believe that ANYONE (no matter what religion) who claims to follow God, could be prejudiced towards anyone. Therefore I tend to disbelieve the media. Could you explain how this came about and what Mormonism does say on racial issues?

| Response |
You asked about a media statement that said the people of African descent are not allowed in the Mormon Church. That is simply untrue. I could not guess where it was printed or why. Membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) totals nearly eleven million. More than half of these members are outside of the United States. We have thousands of members of the LDS Church who are African descents throughout South America, Africa, Europe, and the United States. In fact, the church actually operates and has congregations in 167 countries around the world. The leaders of some congregations in the United States, as well as in other countries, are also of African descent. We welcome men and women of all races,
colors, and creeds. The church absolutely objects to any form of discrimination against anyone of any race, religion, or ethnic background, and we invite all to "come unto Christ" and partake of the blessings that are found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
