Beliefs > Question & Answer > Comparing The LDS Church and Other Religions

Question Q. Lately I have become quite interested in the LDS church and the Mormon faith. In my bit of research that I have done I have come to understand that the LDS church is a Christian faith. But others have said that Mormons are not Christians. Is this true? Is not the definition of being a Christian believing in Christ and following his teachings? I know some may say that because you use the Book of Mormon that that is not of God. Now that I do not know. I have not read it. But the Catholics also use other Holy books in their faith and they are considered Christian. Is not the LDS church a part of the Christian faith as, how one might say, another denomination? I am a bit unclear on this and would like some clarity. I do have another question though. The LDS church has services on Sunday, right? What does that entail? What are the services like? Is there Sunday School for all ages? Do they have a youth group sort of fellowship? And one last one, you do take communion don't you?

Response A. Regarding questions about the LDS church. Your first question asks, "Why have some said Mormons are not Christian?" It is a strange thing that such a comment could be made, considering that the name of our church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Book of Mormon is precisely what it claims to be on its very title page: "Another Testament of Jesus Christ". We definitely believe in Christ, we preach of Christ, we teach our children that he is the very source to look to for salvation and eternal life. We love him, we know that he is our Savior, and that because of his atoning sacrifice in behalf of all of us, we can return to live with him and our Heavenly Father throughout the eternities, if we will take upon ourselves his name and keep his commandments.

Your second question was about the Book of Mormon, and that others have said that it is not of God. When I hear that, I am confident those "others" have not read the Book of Mormon. If they had, they would find that this is another testament for Jesus Christ, and the account of a people who came out of Jerusalem at 600 B.C. and were guided by the Lord to the America's and given that land as a promised land on conditions of their faithfulness. Like the Jews of old, which the Bible tells about, the Lord also sent prophets to those people on the American continent. Those prophets taught the people not only of the coming of Jesus Christ but also the mind and will and commandments of the Lord. The book further tells of Christ's ministering among these people after his resurrection in Jerusalem. The writings of those prophets over the thousand year history of these people was compiled by one of the last prophets whose name was Mormon (hence, the name Book of Mormon).
There is a great promise on P.529 of the book. Moroni 10:4-5,
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

Your third question asked whether the LDS church has services on Sunday. The answer is, yes, we do. There is a formal worship service where the Sacrament (Holy Communion) is passed to the congregation and followed by a couple of different meetings. One meeting is for the women of the congregation (Relief Society), and another for the men (Priesthood), and a third with Sunday School classes for each individual age group in the congregation. Additionally, we have a youth group (for ages 12-17) that meets during the week, with classes and activities for the teenagers in the congregation.

I hope this is helpful and when the time is right I will be pleased to ask a couple of representatives from the church to contact you and to explain to you in detail what we believe and why. Please let me know if I can be of help.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
