Beliefs > Question & Answer > Marriage

Question Dear Donny, Please clarify the following beliefs answer of yours.

"First of all, members of the church are allowed to remarry upon the death of a spouse. As you have learned, if a man remarries and the woman he marries was not already sealed to another man eternally in the temple, that man would be sealed to both of these women."

Am I understanding this correctly in that by being sealed to two women in your example, plural marriage exists and is practiced after death? I also would like to know if it was purposeful that you cited a man being sealed to two women rather than a woman being sealed to two men. Can the latter situation exist?

"But, if a man marries a widowed woman who had previously been married and sealed in the temple, this new marriage would be for the duration of this life only and she would be with her first husband in the eternities."

Please tell me, is it possible to get "unsealed" (and can you do it after the death of the person to whom you are sealed?) I think if I persevered with hope through marriage to a "batterer" to have them die before I accepted or reconciled the failure in my marriage here on Earth I would want to "start over". Who knows? Husband #2 may be the joy of your life and surely it makes sense that one would want to be with husband #2.

Response You asked if a man is sealed to his first wife and she subsequently dies, and he subsequently remarries in the temple, and that marriage is also sealed, would they be together for the eternities? That is true. You asked if you should conclude that that meant that there was plural marriage in our Heavenly Father’s celestial kingdom. It does.

The opposite situation of a woman being sealed to two men cannot exist. There is a patriarchal order to this.

You asked if it were possible to be "unsealed," and could one do it after the death of a spouse. The answer is yes. The Church does not encourage the cancellation of a sealing, because of its sacred and eternal nature, and it should not trivialize the sealing with the casual cancellation of it. However, if there were a compelling reason for such a cancellation, an appeal would be made in writing, with the help of one’s priesthood leaders, to the First Presidency of the Church. If the appeal had merit, the cancellation would be granted.

Thank you for your compliments on our web page. I’m wondering if it would be helpful for me to send a couple of representatives from the Church to explain what we believe and why, so that you could determine for yourself whether this was worth pursuing. Let me know.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
