Beliefs > Question & Answer > Questions about Jesus Christ

Question Why do Mormons believe that, the second coming or when Jesus will "come back", he will come back to the state of Missouri?

What is the basis for that belief? Missouri was not even a state when he was here and the Bible teaches he will return to the land of the Jews?

Response You asked why Mormons believe that at the Second Coming, Jesus will come back to the state of Missouri, and wanted to know the basis of that belief. Specifically, here is what we believe on the subject of the return of our Savior Jesus Christ to the earth.

Like all Christians of real faith in Christ, we believe that "no man knoweth the hour, no, not even the angels in heaven," of His return. But we know that when He comes, He will come with power and great glory, and it will be at a time when Jerusalem is under siege, in what the scriptures have identified as the battle of Armageddon. Just as the city is about to be overrun, our Savior will descend. As His feet touch the Mount of Olives, the mountain shall "cleave in twain," meaning break in half. A great valley will thus be created, which will allow the Jews to escape the armies that are attacking them. Concurrent with this event, all people living on the earth will know of His coming. They will witness His descent from heaven. Every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is the Christ. There will be many other great and glorious events that will surround His coming. It will be wonderful.

His visit to His temple at a place near Independence, Missouri, will not be His "glorious" coming. In a revelation given to the prophet Joseph Smith, we learn that before He comes to the earth in His glory for all to witness, He will visit His temple, which is to be built in Independence, Missouri by the church. There, He will visit the prophet and other leaders of the church just as promised by the prophet Malachi (see Malachi 3:1-2).
1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
In any event, this will not be His glorious coming that is going to be witnessed by all mankind, but it certainly will be a sacred and important event.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
