| Question |
I was told by the missionaries that are visiting my husband and myself, that Jesus was chosen to be our Savior because He was without sin. However, I am a little confused as to how going somewhere for three days when you are twelve years of age, without telling your mother and step-father that you are going or where you are going, can be considered "honoring thy mother and father".
Does the fact that He was baptized after this event have anything to do with the fact that He was considered without sin?

Regarding your question about the missionaries who are teaching you and their answer that Jesus was chosen to be our Savior because He is without sin, since you are currently meeting with the missionaries, ask them if they will share with you a copy of a book of latter-day scripture, entitled The Pearl of Great Price. In it there are the books of Moses and Abraham. You can find specific references to how Jesus was chosen to be our Savior in the beginning. Specifically, see Moses 5:6-9 and Abraham 3:22-28.
Your second question appears to be how would Jesus, at the age of twelve, wander away from His parents and get left behind while the caravan moves on…how could He disobey His parents if He was perfect, since the scriptures tell us to honor our father and our mother? First of all, you must realize that Christ grew from a child to manhood, learning as He went. He did not know all things as a child, but as the scripture says, "He grew from grace to grace" and as Paul later said in Hebrews 5:8, "Yet learned He obedience by the things which he suffered." We can see that like all of our Father’s children, Christ himself was given the opportunity to learn by his many experiences. Because He is the Son of God, he had greater intellect and was considerably more in tune with the spirit than we are. But, all of these experiences were for His good and gave Him experience. When He wandered away from His parents, He was not on some mischievous deed, but rather had a more holy purpose in that He was discussing points of the gospel with priests and teachers in the temple. That’s a pretty amazing thing for a boy of age twelve.
The fact that Jesus was baptized as an adult had nothing to do with sins because He committed none. He came to John to be baptized, as the scripture tells us in Matthew 3:13-17, John was hesitant to baptize Him saying instead that he (John) had need to be baptized of Him (Christ), but Christ answered him and said, "Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness." Jesus was setting the perfect example for us, showing the necessity that we must all be baptized.
I hope this is helpful to you, Lisa. May the Lord’s richest blessings be yours as you continue your study of the gospel with the missionaries.
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
