Was the appearance of Christ in America viewed by the Mormons as his second coming?

No. Christ has appeared many different times throughout history and His appearances were not confined only to the people of the eastern hemisphere. He appeared in the old testament times as Jehovah. He appeared during His life and ministry in the New Testament. His appearance, as recorded in the Book of Mormon was to the Nephites in this American continent, and He also visited the isles of the sea, and in the latter days came to His prophets, but the second coming has not yet occurred. As far as this "Second Coming" is concerned, no one knows "when" this will happen, only our Father in Heaven knows. (Matthew 24:36) There are so many things that have been prophesied of, and need to transpire before this great day occurs. We do know, however, "what" will happen. For example, He will come in great glory (Matthew 16:25-31) (Acts 1:11) and every eye shall see Him (Rev 1:7) and every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ. (Philippians 2:11) Regarding this visit to America, let's go back to the time before Christ was born in Palestine. The prophets of old like Isaiah, Jeremiah and others taught the Jews to look forward to the coming of the Messiah. This Messiah was to make an atonement for the sins of the world, which he accomplished. However, before Jesus completely finished his mission to the Jews in Palestine, which was pretty much confined to Israel, except in the special cases where those of other nations by exceeding faith sought him for blessings, He said, "I lay down my life for the sheep; and other sheep I have which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd." (John 10:15-16) Christ fulfilled this prophesy when He revealed himself to the people on the American continent. He planted the gospel there with all its fullness, richness, power, and blessings. They had apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, and evangelists; the same order, the same priesthood, the same ordinances, gifts, powers, and blessings, as were enjoyed in Palestine. This Book of Mormon truly is a second witness that Jesus is the Christ; that he appeared on the American continent after his crucifixion as the resurrected Lord, and that He is the Messiah as recorded in 3rd Nephi by the descendants of Lehi, the remnants of whom we now have among us known as the American Indians.
