Question

First of all, let me say that you Mormons have a really beautiful Temple out here in Ky. that they just completed. I was reading some of your questions and answers on your beliefs page and was just wondering--What do you think has been lost in the translation of the Bible? and If God has spoken to your prophet why do you think he has not done it since? I am a little bit confused, in reading your beliefs pages I read about "heavenly parents", are you implying that there is a "female counter-part" to God?

I am pleased that you enjoyed the new temple in Kentucky. You asked what I think has been lost in the translation of the Bible and if God has spoken to our prophet and why I think that He had not done it since. Concerning what has been lost in the translation of the Bible, we learn from the Book of Mormon that all of the prophets since Adam, preached Jesus Christ, His coming, and His atoning sacrifice for us. Yet, we find only vague reference to that by some of the Old Testament prophets, and none call Him by His name, Jesus Christ. In the book of Genesis we find reference to Enoch, but there is little specific information given there about his ministry and teachings. In the book of Moses (from latter-day scripture) we find several chapters dealing with Enoch and his ministry. Time and space in this e-mail does not provide room for other specifics, but I would invite you to obtain a copy of the Book of Mormon and specifically read 1 Nephi, chapter 13, verses 19 through 29 to gain some specific insight into our belief on that subject. You have rightly said that God has spoken to our prophet (Joseph Smith) regarding many great and wonderful things concerning the restoration of Christ’s true gospel here upon the earth in these last days. Since that time, there have been fourteen other men called as prophets, seers, and revelators, even down to this present time where our prophet, Gordon B.Hinckley is not only the president and leader of this church, but he is a prophet who speaks with God and learns His will concerning how to properly guide the people during these turbulent times. Your second question said that you were a little confused in reading the beliefs page about "Heavenly Parents" and whether we were implying that there is a "female counterpart" to God. You are right. We are not only implying, but stating categorically that there is a "female counterpart" who is our Heavenly Mother, of which there is nothing else known except that fact. If it would be helpful to you, I would be happy to have a couple of representatives from our church call on you to explain what it is that we believe about these prophets and why it is truly different and what benefit it might be to you and your family.
