Beliefs > Question & Answer > Modern Day Revelation

Question I have a few questions for you. What would you do if you did find some areas where LDS doctrine differed from the Bible? and what if you found that the Bible to be fully 100% true? What if Jesus Christ is eternal not having a beginning? Like Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 44:6; John1:1-14; and Philippians 2:5-11. Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus is the spirit brother of Lucifer? Where in the Bible does it say we can progress to become a god like our heavenly Father is? How can we do this since we are finite and God our heavenly Father is infinite? Are you saying that God our heavenly Father had a beginning? Where in the Bible does it talk about that?

Response Thanks for your e-mail. You have posed some very interesting questions.

You asked, "What would I do if I found some areas where LDS doctrine differed from the Bible?" In answering that, I refer first to one of the basic beliefs of our church, and that is, we believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly. We believe that when the Bible was originally printed in book form in 325 A.D. many plain and precious things were taken from the writings of the old prophets, the apostles, and even the teachings of Christ. Prior to that time, the writings of these prophets and apostles were kept in their original form on papyrus scrolls. The Bible being translated from Hebrew to Greek, to Latin, and finally to English may have caused some changes or deletions in some gospel principals. Having said all that, we are still confident that the Bible is the word of God even though some doctrine has been left out.

Now to the question, if I found that LDS doctrine differed from the bible I would believe the LDS doctrine, simply because in our Church we have a prophet at the head of the Church who is guided by the Lord, and guides the people today just as prophets of old guided the children of Israel. In Amos 3:7 we read, "Surely the Lord God will do nothing but will reveal his secrets to his servants the prophets." Because we believe that God continues to be God today, we believe that it is just as important to have prophets to guide the people now as it was then.

Your next question was, "What would I do if I found the Bible to be fully 100% true?" If you mean what would I do if I found the Bible was true and the LDS church doctrine not, then I would have to say that I could not believe the LDS doctrine. However, because of modern day scripture which compliments the Bible totally and does not replace it, but more clearly defines points of doctrine and provides us with "the fullness of the everlasting gospel" I know that the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be true and the word of God.

You asked, "What if Jesus Christ is eternal, not having a beginning?" You referenced scriptures to support that statement. One of those scriptures is John 1:1-14, which states that "in the beginning was the word and the word was with God, and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God." We can see from that scripture that in fact there was a beginning at some point eons ago, but we believe that the word eternal is that those who inherit eternal life will live with God and Christ forever without end.

You've asked, "Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus is the spirit brother of Lucifer?" The scriptures make it clear that we are all the spirit children of Heavenly Father. (See Numbers 16:22, Matthew 5:48, Acts 17:29, Romans 8:16, and Hebrews 12:9) He is our Father; we are his children, Jesus Christ, our elder brother, was also in the beginning with God. Lucifer was also there, but was cast out of God's presence for rebellion and became Satan. As we can read in Isaiah chapter 14:12-15, and Revelations 11:7-9. In modern day scripture we read in the book of Moses a clear statement of that fact.

You asked where in the bible, it says that we can progress to become a God like our Heavenly Father is and how can we do this since we are finite and he is infinite? We believe that we have been commanded by Jesus Christ himself to perfect ourselves and become like God (see Matthew 5:48 and 2 Peter 3:11-12). We believe in eternal progression and that through the gift of Christ we move from grace to grace, that is, we gain greater knowledge, greater light. If we will take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ and keep his commandments we will draw ever closer to him. We believe that we can progress throughout this life and in the next. As we grow and progress we may eventually, over the eons of time, become closer and closer to God. If we are commanded to be perfect as he is, what other thing could we believe, and what an interesting perspective and purpose that gives to this life as well as the next. Ponder it, and pray sincerely about it and I am confident that you will agree.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
