Question I have a friend that committed suicide and I have almost done it myself and i was wondering is it true that if you commit suicide you automatically go to hell? Also could you please explain why it is considered selfish?

Response Only the Lord knows the hearts and minds of His children. It would be impossible for me therefore, to say what is automatic and what is not about the condition of ones self after they leave this life. I only know this, the Lord knows who you are. He loves you. He knows your pain. He knows your trials. His atoning sacrifice not only pays for our sins, but also covers all of our grief, pain, trials, and disappointments. I’ve found in my life that by putting total trust in my Heavenly Father and His son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with the difficulties and trials I have faced, that I have found the strength to overcome them. I wish there was time in this e-mail for me to list for you the many trials that I have suffered in my lifetime. I haven’t enjoyed any of the trials I have faced, but all of them have schooled me and strengthened me, as I remained faithful and true to the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I beg you to have faith in my knowledge of that, until your own experiences are such that you can have total faith and knowledge yourself.

Regarding you question as to why suicide is considered selfish, it is because when one commits suicide there are so many helpless people left behind. They are helpless because countless friends and family members, even I myself, would do anything to help you avoid that decision, if you would only have allowed them. They will suffer tremendous grief and pain from not being able to be involved and help you.

If you have considered, or are now considering suicide, I beg you not to do it. There are things ahead of you in this life that are so much better than the pain that you feel which is now motivating you in that direction. Naturally, I don’t know your relationship with members of your extended family. I would hope that this relationship would be very strong. But, even if the relationship with your family is not strong, not only does the Lord know you, but He also knows who it is that you are supposed to marry. He also knows who it is that will be your children. I suspect that you will be one of the great mothers of all time when the time is right. To commit suicide will deny some sweet child the blessing of you as his or her mother. I hope this has been helpful for you. I’m sorry that I don’t have more space to give to this very important question.

Sincerely,

Donny Osmond
